Virginia Ruth Greenwood Obituary

Virginia Ruth Greenwood, 85, formerly of Watertown, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at her home in Aiken, South Carolina.

She was born October 16, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of Robert and Ruth (Doane)  Spencer. She graduated from Sackets Harbor High School in 1958 and would later graduate from Jefferson Community College with an associates degree in 1987.

Virginia married Clyde Augustus, and together they had four children before later divorcing.  While residing in Watertown she held various positions, including work as a waitress, bartender and bookkeeper.

On November 28, 1992, she married Lorne C. Greenwood in the Town of Pamelia. The couple moved to Alabama where Virginia worked in the accounting department at General Machinery in Birmingham until her retirement in 1998. In 2001, they moved to Aiken, South Carolina. She and her husband enjoyed dancing and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Lorne C. Greenwood; her four children, Kerry and Beth Augustus of Watertown, NY, Marc and Cecilia Augustus of Geneva, NY, Peter Augustus of Watertown, NY, and James Augustus of Clay, NY; five grandchildren, Sean Augustus of Newark, NY, Julia and Carrie Augustus of West Henrietta, NY,  Brian and Arden Augustus of Cupertino, CA, Elena and Kyle Phelan of Fairport, NY, and Devon Augustus of Brownville, NY. She is also survived by her stepson, Steven Greenwood and his wife Sue of Marietta, GA; her step sons-in-law, Bruce (Sue) Prior of Watertown, NY, and David Somerville of Mauldin, SC; and numerous step-grandchildren, including Cassandra and Michael Myers, Tracy and Morris Klock, Amanda and Michael Olley, Whitney and Jeffrey Burr, Michael Prior, Matthew and Alexis Prior, Christopher and Emily Prior, Jacob and Darcee Prior, Stephen Prior, David Bosworth, and Tory Somerville. She is further survived by  a sister, Barbara Smith, of Las Vegas, NV;  sister-in-law, Raphael Spencer of  Cumming, GA;  six great-grandchildren, 32 step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law and her husband, Louise and Robert Lyman of Kissimmee, FL.

She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, David Spencer; a sister, Patricia Wlodarek; a daughter-in-law, Tina Augustus; two stepdaughters, Tammy Prior and Sandra Somerville; a step-granddaughter, Mary Prior; and sisters -in-law, Shirley Jobson and Eileen Baker.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 10th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. 

A prayer service will be held on Saturday, April 11th, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
