CALCIUM, NY – Virgil L. Patchen, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on February 3, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on September 9, 1950, in Watertown, NY, he was the son of Virgil Patchen and Ruth Berry Schaumburg and he attended Indian River Central School. Virgil started out his career as a driver for Pickerts and then for over 40 years, owned and operated VP General Contracting.
He was known for his love of fishing, boating, gardening, and rebuilding John Deere tractors. He lovingly tormented his wife with all his John Deere tractors and unfinished projects. A prankster at heart, Virgil never missed an opportunity to make people laugh, often saying, “If I can make one person laugh, my day is finished.”
On September 7, 1996, he married his beloved wife, Dawn Vest, at their home. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter.
Virgil is survived by his beloved wife, Dawn M. Patchen of Calcium, NY; two daughters, Michelle (John) Farrell of Philadelphia, NY, and Alicia (Josh) Hollenbeck of Evans Mills, NY; three stepchildren, Nichoel Patterson of Arlington, WA, Sonia (Mike) Johnsen of Arlington, WA, and Tamra Delaney of Land O’ Lakes, FL; and his two cherished dogs Taylor and Toby.
He was a devoted grandfather to Courtney Farrell, Joshua Hollenbeck II, Jayde Olson, August Battes, Jacob Bonk, Casey Bonk, Winter Johnsen, Daniel Johnsen, Autumn Johnsen, Luke Johnsen, Annalise Johnsen, Shepard Johnsen, Irie Delaney Popiwny and Sean Coffman.. He also leaves behind one great-grandchild, Laylah Olsen.
Virgil is also survived by his two brothers, Doug Patchen of Adams, NY, and Marty Patchen of Rochester, NY; three sisters, Mia "Sue" Vansteen of Rochester, NY, Marsha (Dale) Bushak of Connecticut, and Renee (Bruce) Roggie of Henderson, NY; as well as his sister-in-law, Cathy Patchen of Adams, NY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Patchen.
Arrangements are with Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. It was his wish to be cremated and services will be held at the convenience of the family.
