Shirley Young Obituary

Shirley A. Young, 88, formerly of Black River, New York, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024, at the home of her daughter in Conway, South Carolina, where she was under the care of Hospice and her family.

She was born on April 14, 1936, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Frederick and Julia (LaBreck) Rushlow. Shirley attended Cooper Street School in Watertown. She married Harold Crandall in 1953, and although the marriage ended in divorce, they shared two years together. Shirley remarried to Adelbert N. Young on July 4, 1974, in Watertown and together they had two daughters. The couple resided in Black River, where she devoted herself to homemaking. Adelbert retired from New York Air Brake and passed away on January 26, 1993.

Shirley enjoyed playing bingo, reading, watching TV, traveling, bird watching, she was an avid wrestling fan and her favorite was Cody Rhodes.  She also had two dogs who she spoiled immensely, Molly and Max.

Among her survivors are her two daughters and their husbands, Shirley Ann (Jim) Willis of Florida, Loretta and David Natowitz of Conway, South Carolina, a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Christine Crandall of Watertown, New York, 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two nieces, Dorothy Daniels, of Black River, NY and Wendy Montroy of Canton, NY.

She is predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Adelbert, a son Richard Crandall, three stepsons Adelbert N. Young Jr., James, and Craig Young, her stepdaughter, Darla, and her husband, Gene Lewis, a brother Kenneth Rushlow, and five sisters, Dorothy Rushlow, Helen Allen, Margaret Rushlow, Betty Rushlow, and Sally Leween.

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. Shirley’s wish was to be cremated, and a graveside service will be held at the Black River Cemetery on Thursday, July 25th at Noon. A celebration of life will follow at 1 p..m. at the Black River American Legion.

Donations may be made to the SPCA of Jefferson County or to Grand Strand Humane Society of Myrtle Beach where her two rescues came from.
