Sarah T. Barney, 90, of Black River, NY, passed away on March 27, 2025, in Rome, NY. She was born on January 29, 1935, in Black River, NY, the daughter of Leon and Florence (Lashaw) Wooledge.
Sarah attended Black River High School before moving to Tennessee, where she worked as a caregiver and served in the labor and maternity ward at Epperson Hospital. After returning home, she continued her work as a caregiver in Black River and later joined the House of the Good Samaritan as a nurse’s assistant from 1956 to 1962. From 1964 to 1974, she transitioned into secretarial work before leaving to focus on raising her family.
A lifelong and active member of the First Baptist Church of Black River, Sarah enjoyed cooking, baking, and caring for children. On January 20, 1963, she married Raymond Barney in Walton, NY, and the couple made their home in Black River. Raymond worked as a school bus driver for the Carthage Central School District for several years before his passing.
Sarah is survived by her five children: Sonya Barney and Paul Vandermill of Adams Center, NY; Donna Jackson of Rome, NY; Douglas and Melissa Barney of Henderson, NV; Dale Morrow of Rome, NY; and Irving and Althea Barney of Vernon, NY. She is further survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and beloved husband she was predeceased by seven siblings.
Arrangements are with Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 1, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the funeral home, followed by a prayer service at 5:30 PM before proceeding to First Baptist Church of Black River for the funeral service at 6 p.m.. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur, NY, on Friday, May 23rd at 1 p.m.
