Richard C. "Dick" Williams Obituary

Richard C. “Dick” Williams, 93, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sept. 8th , 2024. He had been a patient at Summit Village, Watertown, for the past year and a half.

Born April 10, 1931 in Chaumont, NY, he was one of 16 children born to Edwin E. and Rosetta Youngs Williams. He graduated from Lyme Central School in 1949, joined the Navy Feb. 1950 and was discharged Nov. 1953 as a Class A Electronics Technician, ET3, earning a National Defense Service and  Good Conduct Medals. He spent 2 ½ years aboard the USS Orion as a submarine electronics repairman stationed at Norfolk, VA, as well as the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

In 1954 he went to work for Ruddell Business Machines, selling and repairing office equipment. After leaving Ruddell’s he opened his own business, Impact of Watertown, selling the business after a few years to Kex Copy Source of Syracuse, and in 1985 went to work at Fort Drum as an Electronic Equipment Repairer with Range Division, operating and maintaining the targets used on the tank training ranges, retiring from there in Sept. 1995.

Richard married Barbara E. McAnulty July 29, 1956, at the Smithville Baptist Church, Smithville, NY. They recently observed their 68th Anniversary. They lived in Watertown for a few years, then Smithville, moving back to Watertown in 1961, building their home on Weaver Rd in 1962 and 63.

A member of Stone Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, he taught Sunday School, was a youth advisor and basketball coach, and served as Deacon, Trustee and Elder. He served on the committee that organized the Watertown Urban Mission and was its 1st treasurer, and was on the committee that started the Meals on Wheels program in Watertown. After retiring he volunteered at the Urban Mission Food Pantry for several years.

He enjoyed woodworking, cooking, playing cards with friends, reading Civil War & WWII books and travelling, having visited Mexico, Hawaii, Canada and several US states, but most of all loved his family, and he will be greatly missed by all of us.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two children, Terry R. Williams (Bridgette), Watertown, and Valerie S. Williams, Chittenango; five grandchildren, Heather, Ryon (Molly), Becky (Ricky Wideman), Dennis (Valerie) and Jordan (Grace), 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine (Kate) Busby, Summit Village, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by eight brothers: Clifford, Robert, Ernest, Donald, Herbert, Gilbert, Dean and Paul, and six sisters: Ruth Chambers, Edith Kelly, Dorothy Ludlow, Ethel Wiley, Margaret Thomas and Jeanne Cavitch.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 14th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St, Watertown.   Burial with military honors will immediately follow at Brookside Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m.at Stone Pres Church, 140 Chestnut St.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Stone Presbyterian Church or the Watertown Urban Mission, 247 Factory St.
