Nelson C. Schorr Sr. Obituary

Nelson C. Schorr Sr., 80, of Watertown, New York, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at the Hospice Residence at the Ellis Farm in Watertown, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on February 1, 1945, in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Harold and Mary (Kistner) Schorr. Nelson attended schools in Newark and Irvington, New Jersey, before proudly serving in the United States Army, from which he was honorably discharged.

On February 22, 1970, he married Donna L. Davis at the First Baptist Church in Black River. The couple made their home in Watertown, where Donna was a dedicated homemaker.

Nelson, along with his brothers Robert “Bob” Schorr (and later with their brother) Harold Schorr, owned and operated Schorr Service Center and Car Wash, formerly Schorr's' Sunoco on Leray Street in Watertown. The business began in 1968 when Nelson and Bob purchased it on a handshake deal from former Congressman Hadwin Fuller, who at the time was president of Parish Energy Fuels.

A life member of the Northside Improvement League, Nelson was known for his deep love of animals and his compassionate heart—he was always quick to care for homeless animals in need. He also enjoyed racing go-karts, attending car shows, admiring classic cars, and most of all, spending time with his family.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Nelson C. Schorr Jr. and Sharon Schorr of Ohio; three stepchildren: Linda Liner of North Carolina, Robert “Bob” Ackley Jr. of Watertown, NY, and David Ackley and his wife Mary Lou of Carthage, NY; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Nelson was predeceased by his beloved wife Donna on May 3, 2024; a daughter-in-law, Linda Ackley; his sister, Anna Carrera; and his two brothers and their wives: Robert “Bob” and Claudia Schorr, and Harold and Jean “Yung Ja” Schorr.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Glenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nelson’s memory may be made to the SPCA of Jefferson County.
