Michael G. Lachenauer, 74, of Chaumont, New York, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024 at Samaritan’s Summit Village, where he resided for the past six years.
Born on January 23, 1950 in Watertown, New York, he was the son of George and Helen (Gartland) Lachenauer. Michael graduated from Watertown High School in 1969 and furthered his education at Jefferson Community College. Following his studies, he joined his father in the family business, Hayes Fire Equipment, eventually taking over ownership until the early 90s. He later transitioned to Craig Systems, specializing in installing alarms and fire security systems. His dedication extended to Jefferson County, where he maintained fire and security alarms across county buildings until his retirement in 2009.
On May 5, 1978, Michael married Christine L. Sibley of Hermon, New York at the Immaculate Conception Church in Brownville. The couple made their home in Watertown before settling in Chaumont in 1984. Michael was passionate about sailing, playing cards, and cherished moments spent with family and friends. His commitment to the community was evident through his roles as a member and Chief of the Chaumont Volunteer Fire Department, as well as serving as a code enforcement officer, councilman, deputy mayor, and mayor of Chaumont.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife Christine S. Lachenauer, three sons and their wives, Timothy J. and Jodi Lachenauer of Ogdensburg, New York, Mark A. and Tiffany Lachenauer of San Antonio, Texas, Todd M. Lachenauer of West Monroe, New York, six grandchildren, Zachary Lachenauer, Hunter Lachenauer, Drew Bice, Brittney Bice (Aiden Cameron), Parker Lachenauer, and Sophia Lachenauer; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Edward and Sheryl Lachenauer, and Cindy Lachenauer of Three Mile Bay, father-in-law, Wallace Sibley, several nieces, nephews, numerous cousins and his pug, Ming-Li.
In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by two brothers, a sister-in-law, and a mother-in-law, David Lachenauer, Charles and Karen Lachenauer, and Hazel Sibley.
Calling hours will be held 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st, at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, the funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home.
