Marie A. Marra Obituary

Marie Marra, 97, of Clay, NY

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Marie Antoinette Marra, passed away at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of CNY on July 26, 2024. She was 97.

Born in Watertown, NY, on February 11,1927, the adored daughter of Alexander H. Cozzie and Margaret (DePoto) Cozzie, Marie took pride in her skills as a gymnast and dancer. She graduated in 1945 from Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, NY, and was employed as a bookkeeper at Conde’s Hardware Store. Then, on a blind date arranged by her brother, Richard, she met the love of her life, Anthony Marra. Anthony had completed his valiant service in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. They married September 16, 1950, at Holy Family Church in Watertown with Monsignor Albert Farrell officiating. Together, they raised seven children.
Marie devoted her life to caring for her family and her greatest wish was that her children be loving, kind children of God. She brought music into her family’s lives. As a talented pianist, she would play while the family gathered around to sing. She had a deep devotion for animals and, much to the chagrin of her husband, would adopt strays and at one time cared for eighteen cats and various neighborhood dogs. She enjoyed puzzles, bowling, golfing, cooking, baking her famous Italian Christmas cookies, and being surrounded by her family. She supported many organizations that worked for the causes she held dear including Boys Town and Catholic missionaries throughout the world.

For the past eleven years, Marie’s daughter, Dedra, and son-in-law, John, cared for her in their home and showered Marie with all the love and attention she so deserved.

Marie is survived by her brother, Anthony (Mary) of Florida, along with her children, Cynthia (Dick) Marks of California, Cathy Marra-Wahl of Rochester, Michael of Georgia, Steven (Linda) of Georgia, Christine (Paul) Mooney of Glenfield, Todd (Catherine) of New Hampshire, and Dedra (John) Cloonan of Clay, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Marie is predeceased by her parents, her husband after fifty-two years of marriage, her sisters (Gloria and Adaleen), and her brothers (Richard and Rudy).

Calling hours will be held at Hart and Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown, NY, on Tuesday, July 30 from 11 am -12:30 pm with a prayer service to follow. A mass celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 pm at Sacred Heart Church, West Lynde Street, with Fr. Don Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Online condolences may be left at www.hartandbrucefh.com
