Lewis Schofield Obituary

Lewis A. Schofield, 86, of 259 Barben Ave.., Watertown, passed January 23, 2018 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service.  The body will be cremated and burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Born on December 23, 1931 in Gouverneur, NY, son of the late Joseph A. & Mary Lewis Schofield Jr., he graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1949 and attended college in Plattsburg for a year. 

Following school he served in the U.S. Army Reserves for three years.  He worked at W.T. Grant’s Department Store in Gouverneur, the Watertown Daily Times for a year as a salesman, and moved to Watertown in 1956 and worked for Henry’s Jewelry Store until 1959.  He went to work for “Retail Credit” in 1959 as an insurance investigator.  The main office was located in Atlanta, Georgia he worked from the Watertown branch later it became known as Equifax.  He retired from there in 1980.

Mr. Schofield was an avid railroad enthusiast, enjoyed model railroads, woodworking, and civil war history.

He married Nancy Johnson of Gouverneur on January 29, 1955 in the Gouverneur Baptist Church by Lewis’s father, Rev. Joseph Schofield Jr., and Rev. William Work.

Nancy was a homemaker and later worked for Joann Fabrics as a salesclerk. 

The couple spent summers since 1969 on Point Salubrious in Chaumont and moved there year around in 1983. They then moved to Curtis Apartments in 2002.

Among his survivors are three sons and two daughters in law, Joseph A. Schofield of Tonawanda, Glenn R. & Paula Schofield of Utica, Theodore L. “Ted” and Denise Schofield of Chaumont, a daughter, Jane E. Schofield of Watertown, three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, a brother and sister in law, Lemuel and Shirley Schofield of Florida.

Besides his parents and his loving wife, Nancy Schofield who died May 28, 2017, two daughters Tracie & Rebecca Schofield died in infancy.
