Howard E. Sprague

Howard E. Sprague, 86, of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

He was born on December 5, 1938, in Woods Mills, NY, the son of Lewis and Grace (Reynolds) Sprague, Sr. Howard grew up on the family farm on Black River Road where he helped his parents while pursuing his education at Watertown High School.

Howard was a self-employed, highly skilled tradesman, working as a carpenter, electrician, and plumber. Over the years, he owned several apartment buildings and properties in the local area. He also served as superintendent of College Heights for several years.

He first married Judy Capone, with whom he had three children. Judy passed away in 1985. On September 6, 1990, Howard married Roseanne Strader in Watertown, where the couple resided their entire marriage.

A devoted member of Watertown Elks Lodge #496, Howard volunteered his time and talents on many projects for the organization. He was also an avid bowler and a passionate supporter of dirt and BMX racing at the Lafargeville Speedway. He and his wife also enjoyed spending winters in Palm Bay, Florida for many years.

Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Roseanne Sprague of Watertown; his children: David Sprague of Sackets Harbor, NY; Christine (Phil) DeSormeau of LaFargeville, NY, Scott Goutremout, of Watertown ; Christopher (Janet) Goutremout of Watertown; Shelly Wells of Brownville, NY; and Crystal Pitre of North Carolina. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Michael Sprague and his brothers Charles, John, and Lewis B. Sprague, Jr.

Arrangements are with Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, with an Elks service beginning at 4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home.
