Gary L. Yates, 74, of Black River, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, at Jefferson County Hospice Facility surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 17, 1951, in Charleston, West Virginia, Gary was the beloved son of Leon and Betty (Lake) Yates. He grew up in West Virginia, graduating from Eastbank High School in 1969, and went on to work for a coal company and on the railroad before answering the call to serve his country.
In 1971, Gary entered the military, proudly serving in the United States Air Force. His service took him to Thailand, Laos, and the First Gulf War. He retired in November 1991 from Griffiss Airforce Base in Rome, New York after a distinguished 20-year career. During his time in the Airforce, Gary earned two college degrees: one from Wayland Baptist University and another from Vernon Regional Junior College.
While stationed in El Paso, Texas, he met the love of his life, Maria Oseguera. They married on December 2, 1989, beginning a beautiful partnership filled with laughter, devotion, and adventure.
After retiring from the Air Force, Gary and Maria settled in Black River, where Gary worked at Fort Drum as a civilian defensive driving instructor. Outside of work, Gary embraced life fully. He loved fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle and moped, and spending time outdoors tending his garden, especially his prized tomato plants and fruit trees. His greatest joy, however, was his family. He adored his grandchildren, delighting in giving them rides on his scooter and gator, creating memories they will cherish forever.
Gary’s warm heart and playful spirit left an impression on everyone who knew him. He was a proud member of the American Legion in Black River and the VFW in Texas, and he enjoyed visits to the casino, especially Akwesasne. His humor, kindness, and steadfast love for those around him will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Maria (“Sweetie”); his sons, Gary Yates of McGuire Air Force Base, NJ, and Adam (Marisa) Yates of Adams, NY; his daughter, Michelle Yates; his five beloved grandchildren: Victoria, Ethan, Charlotte, Briggs, and Lenora; and his sister, Donna Marie Moore of Myrtle Beach S.C. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Allen, and his faithful black lab, Buddy.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 12, from noon to 1:00 p.m. at Bruce Funeral Home, Black River, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Military Honors will take place at Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery.
