Edmund DeMattia Obituary

Edmund H. DeMattia, 79, of Chaumont, New York, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 at the Samaritan Medical Center

Born on October 15, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, he was the son of Edmund H.C. and Ethel (Beebe) DeMattia. Edmund graduated from Edwin O. Smith High School in Storrs, Connecticut, and embarked on a dedicated career with Bell Atlantic in 1982. In 1987, he brought his skills to the Watertown area, where he continued working for Bell Atlantic, later known as Verizon. He took part in the expansion of Fort Drum during his tenure and retired in 2002.

Edmund cherished the outdoors, coffee with friends at the 7-Eleven in Chaumont, golfing, sailing and fishing. In 2004, he made Chaumont his home and devoted time to volunteer work at the Samaritan Medical Center. He was also an eager volunteer at the Nature Conservatory where he was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He was an avid musician playing the acoustic guitar and the harp with good friend Douglas Mock.  He could also be found tagging and cutting down ash trees that were infected with his good buddy Kenny Murray. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Edmund returned to Jefferson Community College, earning two associate’s degrees in Humanities and English. He was also a member of InterTel, a high-IQ society.

He is survived by his sister Elizabeth, and her husband, Carl Acimovic, of Coventry, Connecticut, as well as two nephews, Philip and Alexander and beloved friend and health care provider, Jessica Lister of Watertown, NY.

Arrangements are with the Hart and Bruce Funeral Home, and in accordance with Edmund’s wishes, there will be no services. His wish was to be cremated.

Donations may be made to the Nature Conservatory at Nature.org, Depauville Library PO Box 239 Depauville, NY 13632, or to the First Presbyterian Church PO Box 264 Chaumont, NY 13622.
