Donald P. Arno Obituary

Donald P. Arno, 76, of Black River, NY, passed away at his home on April 25, 2025.

He was born on September 21, 1948, in Limerick, NY, the son of Harold Arno and Dorothy Weston. Donald graduated from General Brown High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force, where he served as a military police officer. He was honorably discharged on June 11, 1968.

Following his military service, Donald embarked on a dedicated 20-year career as a Sergeant with the Watertown City Police Department, retiring in 1992. After retirement, he continued serving the community as a bus driver for Freeman Bus Corp and later for First Student Transportation until his final retirement.

On October 22, 1976, he married Jan E. Madill in Brownville, NY. The couple resided in Watertown before moving to Black River in 1990. Jan, a nurse, worked for Mercy Hospital, North Country Orthopedic Group, and the Watertown City School District before retiring in 2015.

Donald was an avid golfer, bowler, and member of the Watertown Sportsman’s Club. He enjoyed playing in golf leagues and the police department’s baseball league.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jan E. Arno, five children: Paul and Jeannine Arno of Missouri; Janelle and Owen Farris of Missouri; Patrick Arno of Florida; Adrienne Arno of both Los Angeles, CA, and Black River, NY; and Alissa and Jonathan Gaines of Black River, NY. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, as well as his sister, Maureen Heise of Dexter, NY, and many nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, Donald will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bruce Funeral Home.
