Carolyn J. Johnson, 81, of Glen Park, NY, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her beloved family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born on June 6, 1943, in Wytheville, VA, Carolyn was the daughter of Emily (Musser) Gravley-Monaghan. She spent her early years in Virginia, where she attended school. Carolyn married Walter Johnson Sr., and the couple made their home in Virginia. A devoted homemaker, she raised her children and worked as a seamstress for a time. Walter, who was a longtime cab driver, predeceased her.
Carolyn was lovingly nicknamed “Ducky” by those who knew her well, as she had a fondness for walking in the rain. She was an avid animal lover, enjoyed coloring, and loved playing cards. In March of 2024, Carolyn relocated to Glen Park, NY, to be closer to her children, a move that brought her great joy in her later years.
Carolyn is survived by her three children: Mary Ann Almond of Bristol, VA, Walter F. Johnson III (fiancée Tina LeFrancois) of Glen Park, NY, and Ava L. Riley of Glen Park, NY. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Jacob Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Lindsay Peterson, Christopher Riley, Richard Riley, Joanna Bishop, Amanda Bishop, Joey Bishop, Richard Johnson, Logan Mullins, and Deborah Almond; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Burchett of Roanoke, VA, and her sisters, Gladys Sayers and Carol Musser of Wytheville, VA and several nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was predeceased by her mother, Emily Gravley-Monaghan, her grandson, Thomas W. Riley (2010), three brothers, James Musser, Ernest Musser and George Burchett; and a step brother, James Monaghan.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown, NY.
