Andre G. Toutant Sr. Obituary

Andre G. Toutant Sr., 88, of Evans Mills, NY, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at the Carthage Nursing Center, where he had been a resident.

Andre was born on July 24, 1937, in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada, the son of William and Alice Toutant. He grew up in Canada and attended school there until moving to the United States in his early twenties. Andre and his father pursued careers as contractors, beginning their work in Massena, NY. He went on to have a lifelong and successful career as a self-employed contractor. Over the years, he worked for several companies and became a well-respected builder. He owned and operated Toutants Construction in Evans Mills for many years. He also owned a franchise called Ameri-Link through which he built log cabins across various locations, including one in Korea.

Andre married Arlene Verne of Watertown on May 4, 1957, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Evans Mills, where they raised their family and spent most of their lives together. He proudly received his United States citizenship on October 26, 1960.

Andre enjoyed woodworking, carving, ice fishing, water skiing, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and coaching hockey. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, creativity, and the deep love he held for his family.

Among his survivors are three children:Sherry A. and Edward Kidder of Watertown, NY, Andy G. (Paula)  Toutant Jr. of Evans Mills, NY and Matthew J. Toutant  and his companion Lisa Slate of Evans Mills, NY. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Diane LeMay of Montreal, Canada, and a brother, Denny Toutant of Canada; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Andre was predeceased by his beloved wife, Arlene, who passed away in 1985; his daughter, Luanne Toutant; and ten siblings.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 12, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow in Glenwood Cemetery.  Donations in his memory may be made to the Carthage Nursing Center.
