Black River - Robert H. “Bucky” Huni, 89, of 124 West St., Black River, NY passed away June 21, 2019 at the Samaritan Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Born on July 6, 1929 in Harrisville, son of William and Anna Schweitzer Huni, he graduated from Black River High School in 1947.

Following school he started a lifetime career as a steamfitter at H.S. Barehand in Rochester, NY.  He was then drafted into the US Army on August 7, 1951, and served in the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on August 4, 1953.  He received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal as well as the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Medal.

Upon returning home he continued to work as a steamfitter, as a member of Local Unions 117 and 73, working on the construction of breweries, schools, nuclear power plants and numerous projects on Fort Drum. He married Gladys Margaret Johnston on April 19, 1958. She worked at the Watertown Savings & Loan Bank in Watertown as a clerk teller and was a homemaker.

After his retirement in 1993, Bucky volunteered for the Jefferson County Office of the Aging, was a member of the Watertown American Legion Post 61. He enjoyed his daily crossword puzzles, Sudoku, was a voracious reader, painted with water colors and loved nature and being outdoors.  In October 2018, he was honored with the Commander’s Coin from Fort Drum’s Major General Walter Piatt for his selfless and honorable service to his country.

He is survived by five of his children and their spouses, David and Julia Huni, Oregon, Chris Huni, Black River, Mary (Huni) Ryan and Shawn Ryan, N. Syracuse, Ken Huni, Black River, and Dan and Judi Huni, California; seven grandchildren: Meghan Ryan, Brenna Ryan, Courtney Ryan, Collin Ryan, Douglas Huni, Maxwell Huni and Bridget Huni; a sister, Helen Peck, Great Bend, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, his beloved wife Gladys Margaret Huni passed August 8, 2016, his loving son, Thomas R. Huni passed on November 17, 2017 and a brother, William Huni, and two sisters, Pauline Cowan and Doris Goodman all died before him.

A private memorial service for Bucky will be held at a later date surrounded by the family he so deeply loved. There will be no calling hours or funeral services per his wishes.
