Shirley Coleman Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we must announce the passing of our beautiful Mother, Shirley Jean Jewett Coleman a few days before her 91st birthday. Mom passed peacefully at Samaritan Summit Village on March 1st, 2024 where she had been a resident for 6 years. She lived in Brownville for several years before moving into Assisted Living.

Mom was born in Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, NY on March 5th, 1933, the daughter of the late Laurence W. and Bernice McClure Jewett. Mom resided in Calcium for most of her life and attended grade school in the 2 room school house in Calcium. She graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1951 and then attended the Watertown School of Commerce. Shirley was a member of the Pine Grove Grange in Calcium for 20 years.

On May 17th, 1952, Shirley married Joseph P. Coleman at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Rectory. They were married for 46 years before our Dad (Daddy) passed on August 15th, 1998. Mom worked as a clerk at Howland’s Department Store for 8 years, and then retired from Kinney Drugs at the Seaway Plaza, where she worked for 11 years.

Mom is survived by four daughters and two sons: MaryAnne (Mark) Petranchuk of Liverpool, NY, Barbara J. Miller of Fairport, NY, Vicky L. (James) Tesoriero of Oswego, NY, Joseph P. (Pamela) Coleman Jr. of North Carolina, Lucille J. (Timothy) Eiss of Brownville, NY, and Christopher A. Coleman of Ballston Spa, NY. In addition are her much loved 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, who will all miss her more than words can say. She is also survived by her beloved brother, Donald (Rosemary) Jewett of Concord, NH, her beloved sister, Lucille (James) McAllister of DelRay Beach, Florida, her two sisters-in-law, Catherine (Bob) Taylor of Adams Center and Virginia Coleman of Georgia, along with several dear cousins and many, many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to all of the special health care providers on the 2nd floor of Assisted Living at SSV for the wonderful care they provided for our Mom, Grammy, Great Grammy and also for the wonderful care we all received on the 4th floor of Skilled Nursing in the last few weeks. We will never forget you.

Mom’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her whole world and there was nothing she loved more than spending time with them. She also enjoyed reading, traveling to see family, eating lunch out, jigsaw puzzles, and word searches. She greatly enjoyed following family and friends on Facebook and playing games on her IPad.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 16th from 1-3PM at the Hart and Bruce Funeral Home located at 117 North Massey Street in Watertown. The funeral service will be held at 3PM. Mom will be laid to rest in the Sanford Corners Cemetery immediately after the service.

Charitable contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County for the outstanding care they provided to our father and grandfather or to a charity of one's choice.
